During the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549, the English state sought to suppress languages other than English in the Book of Common Prayer. By replacing Latin with English and suppressing Catholicism, English was effectively imposed as the language of the Church, with the intent of its becoming the language of the people. At the time many people in England did not speak English, but they soon had no other choice.
