Human societies across the globe are faced with
myriads of social problems which
encompass significant issues that can have a strong impact on the present and future of each and
every human being. Poverty is one of such major social issues which has not only jeopardized
the social balance in the less developed or developing countries but has also rendered obscurities
to the social systems of the developed countries like the United States.
It is the issue of poverty which is still affecting the majority of the populace of the United
States. The condition of the myriads of Americans have remained wretched economically in a
considerable degree and it has been observed that “the number of Americans living below the
poverty line surged by 27% since the beginning of what it calls the "Great Recession" in 2006,
driving 10 million more people into poverty” (McGreal, 2012). And if such hike continues then it
is obvious for more of Americans to get entrapped within the shackle of poverty in the recent
future. Though the United States did come out of the biggest recession since the Second World
War, the fiscal policies are not looking to be very impressive to prevent this forthcoming danger.
And then, there is again a dilemma which has shrouded the entire society of the United States
and this dilemma is related to the definition or description of poor in the country. Interestingly
enough according to the U.S. Government’s own survey conducted in 2005, “the average
household defined as poor by the government lived in a house or apartment equipped with air
conditioning and cable TV” (Brownfield, 2011). Now such a data is both confusing and
indicative. It is confusing, as by observing such data it can become difficult for an individual
residing in a foreign land to detect whether or not there is actually any poor living in the United
States. But on the other hand the data can indicate how wretched is the condition of those who
are dwelling in the slums of the major cities of the United States. These slum dwellers should be
considered as a class which is poor than the impoverished. And this is a pathetic social condition.
