DUE TOMORROW MORNING: Background info: As we’ve been discussing this week, Kingsolver’s Flight Behavior brings new questions to the climate fiction genre. One of them is the place of science and the stories that it tells about the natural world. Near the end of chapter eleven, Ovid and Dellarobia have a conversation about science and culture. Dellarobia tries to explain to Ovid why the people in her community find it difficult to care about climate change: “You’ve explained to me how big this is. The climate thing. That it’s taking out stuff we’re counting on. But other people say just forget it. My husband, guys on the radio. They say it’s not proven. […] You guys aren’t popular. Maybe your medicine’s too bitter. Or you’re not selling to us. Maybe you’re writing us off, thinking we won’t get it. […] I’d say the teams get picked, and then the beliefs get handed around. Team camo, we get the right to bear arms and John Deere and the canning jars and tough love and taking care of our own. The other side wears I don’t know what, something expensive. They get recycling and population control and lattes and as many second chances as anybody wants. […] I’m just saying. The environment got assigned to the other team. Worries like that are not for people like us.” (Kingsolver 320-322). answer this prompt: (700 words at least) For this week’s blog post, make an argument about the way this novel represents the relationship between science and culture in America. Is there a chance that Ovid can reach people with his message about climate change, or are there two cultures that cannot communicate across the issues that divide them? Good arguments about literature usually do two things well: (1) They make an interesting observation about a text, and (2) they make an argument about why that interesting observation matters (the “so what?” element). The chapters we read in Schilb & Clifford’s A Brief Guide to Arguing about Literature will be our guide to succeeding in this assignment. Consult them regularly! Organize your ideas into well-developed paragraphs. Blog posts that consist of one giant block of words will always earn an Unsatisfactory grade. Support your argument with well-chosen evidence from our texts. Blog posts that do not quote from the text(s) they are discussing, or do not offer analysis/commentary about the quotations they include, will always earn an Unsatisfactory grade. Use the rules of MLA style for citation and documentation. This includes parenthetical citations to cite quotations — for example, (Blair 47) — and a Works Cited list at the end of the post. I recommend consulting the Purdue Online Writing Lab’s MLA Formatting and Style Guide regularly to learn and apply the rules of MLA style. Write clear, grammatically-correct prose that avoids distracting elements, such as errors in spelling, punctuation, or grammar. Be sure to proofread your work and edit carefully before submitting it.
