Introduction

Most of you will work directly one-on-one with clients at some point in your career. It is likely your client(s) may need to or want to change a behaviour. Working on changing a client’s behaviour can be challenging, as there are many barriers to changing behaviour. In this assignment, you will interview a client who may need/want to engage in a particular health behaviour and design an intervention to support them in being successful. This activity is very applied, whereby you will be applying theoretical knowledge learned through lectures and tutorials to a real-life application.

Instructions:

In this assignment, you are required to conduct a motivational interview with a potential client, and design a behaviour change intervention for that client where you apply a behaviour change theory and evidence-based strategies to support your client in changing a health behaviour.

1)Find a ‘CLIENT’ (friend, family member, classmate) who wants to change ahealth behaviour. This could be starting, stopping, increasing, or decreasing engagement in a behaviour to become healthier.

Examples include (but are not limited to): start/increase exercising/walking, stop smoking, increase sleep duration, increase water consumption, start/increase the use of active transportation, increase/start flossing, diet/food intake (decrease sugar/butter intake, increase fruit/vegetable consumption, reduce fizzy drink intake, etc.), reduce alcohol intake, among others.

If you are unsure whether a behaviour qualifies, please ask your tutor/course coordinator via theDialoguecommunication tool onlearnonline.

2)INTERVIEW this ‘client’, and record your interview, making sure you incorporate thefour principlesofmotivational interviewingdiscussed in class and readings (i.e., express empathy, develop discrepancy, roll with the resistance, and encourage self-efficacy).

·The interview should record
both

audio

andvisual
of the client & yourself (the interviewer)

·You need to have your client sign aconsent formfor being recorded for study purposes (seelearnonlinesite for the consent form).

·Upload the consent form and the recorded interview to the e-portfolio site (discussed in tutorials)

3)DESIGN an intervention based onONEhealth behaviour theory listed below (using the core constructs of that theory). On the e-portfolio website, in
1300 words
or less, describe the core aspects of your intervention that are designed to change your client’s behaviour.

·DO NOT define the constructs from the theory.

·Describehow you plan to target ALL of the constructs fromONE theory; this is where you
practically apply
your knowledge of theory.

4)Provide EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH that supports the use of the behavioural strategies you have incorporated into your behaviour change intervention.

·Find research articles that show either: (a) the strategies you implemented have been effective in past interventions, or (b) targeting those constructs within the theory you utilised has shown success.

·Guideline: you should have enough evidence to convince the reader your strategies will be effective (1-2 references for the entire assignment is not enough!)

Approved Models/Theories to Use to Guide your Intervention:

  • Health Belief Model

  • Theory of Planned Behaviour

  • Transtheoretical Model

  • Self-Efficacy Model

  • Self-Determination Theory

Students will be assessed on the following:

  • Appropriate application of a counselling technique (motivational interviewing) and use of behaviour change theory (behavioural modification strategies)

  • Integration and application of knowledge from the course

  • Clarity of writing and expression of ideas

See marking rubric for guidance (posted on thelearnonlinecourse page).

As per Academic Unit Policy, late assignments will be penalised with adeduction of 10% per day(or part thereof, including weekends) for assignments submitted late and without an approved extension.

Extensionswill be granted in the case of unexpected or unforeseen circumstances and may require variation in assessment design(as per the UniSA Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual).
Feedback and grades will be posted onlearnonlinewithin 3 weeks of submission date.

Layout:All assignments are to be submitted via learnonline, using the e-Portfolio template provided (instructions provided on learnonline & will be guided in tutorials).

Format:The motivational interview should last between4-6 minutes in duration, and the intervention design word limit is1300 words(excluding the reference list but includes all in-text writing such as headings, sub-headings, and in-text references). Students exceeding this time limit or word count will be penalised by staff not watching, reading nor marking the additional components.

The assignment should be written in report form, using paragraphs and under the following sub-headings:

  1. Motivational Interview:
    upload the consent form and interview video (audio and visual recording) to this section (4-6 minutes in duration;
    6 minutes maximum
    ).

  1. Client Overview:

Discuss your client’s ultimate goal for behaviour change (what behaviour do they want to change) and how their motivation, personality, environmental barriers, and/or other relevant course content (e.g., anxiety, social norms, etc.) might impact your clients’ ability to change.

  2. Intervention Design:
Using one behaviour change theory or model, describe the strategies you would implement by identifyinghowyou will target each construct within that theory to change your client’s behaviour. Provide research evidence from the literature which supports the behavioural strategies that you have designed for implementation.

  3. References:
Include a list of references used in-text, according to UniSA Harvard Referencing style.

**Note: The 1300-word limit includes the client overview and intervention design sections**

Introduction
In Australia, tobacco smoking is the main factor in illness, disability, and death that may be avoided. It has been estimated that smoking cigarettes, including secondhand smoke, causes 500000 fatalities per year. Smoking
during pregnancy may raise the chance of miscarriage, congenital abnormalities, stillbirth, foetal growth restriction, preterm delivery, placental abruption, and difficulties in the kid, including SIDS and reduced lung function in childhood (Erol,Balci and Sisman,2018). This assignment is based on the problem that comes with smoking and its intervention. Since the 1980s, the transtheoretical model (TTM) has been put out to explain the process for changing smoking-related behaviour. Planning interventions is made easier by having an understanding of how various intervention programmes impact the behaviour change process (Kim, Kang and Vongjaturapat,2021).
Motivation interview
How can motivational interviewing aid smokers in quitting? It is a kind of counselling that may be used to assist individuals in quitting smoking. It attempts to assist individuals in examining the potential causes of their uncertainty about quitting and identifying strategies to increase their sense of readiness and capability (Hsu et al,2020). Counselors attempt to assist individuals choose to modify their own behaviour rather than teaching them why and how to do so, boosting their confidence in their ability to achieve.
MI has mostly been used to control health behaviours in people with behavioural disorders, including alcohol misuse, drug addiction, weight reduction, treatment compliance, and quitting smoking (Lindson‐Hawley, Thompson and Begh,2015). According to one Systematic reviews it is seen that MI has some positive benefits on these behaviours. However, during long-term follow-up, these effects are either negligible or absent, and the included studies are often regarded as being of poor quality, making it difficult to make firm conclusions.
The tenets of MI include a collaborative approach, asking people why they want to change rather than just convincing them, and promoting autonomy so that people don't feel forced to change and may be driven on their own or "internally (Lindson et al,2019)." Methods of communication based on these principles include asking open-ended questions, providing positive reinforcement, and engaging in reflective listening with the goal of increasing the person's self-awareness of the gap between their present conduct and their ideal behaviour. These techniques are seen to be more successful than asking questions, convincing others, or offering advice (Luh et al,2016).
In comparison to treatments like giving smokers quick guidance to stop, meta-analyses have shown that MI-based interventions had only modestly favourable benefits on smoking cessation. In accordance with MI approaches for enhancing commitment for change, participants who indicate an interest in quitting are given a self-help guide for stopping and asked to create a 5-step plan for quitting (McWilliams et al,2019). Decide on a stop date, modify your surroundings, be ready for impulses and triggers, treat yourself, and take medicine in accordance with...
