Rationale
In this Using Evidence Assessment you will be required to answer a professional/ clinical question for a chosen scenario. You can access the scenarios (see below Scenarios section). Search for evidence (using basic or advanced search strategies).
Task
In this assessment you will be required to use basic or advanced searching in the following databases:
- CINAHL
- Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
- TRIP
- Medline
- Embase
- SportDiscus
*Note that there is an error in the learning guide that is missing CINAHL.
Choose the 3 articles that represent best available evidence.
Note: Your PICO question can be used as the title of the report.
Your Using Evidence Assessment should include two sections: 1. Evidence selection, and 2. Evidence summary.
Using Evidence Section 1: Evidence selection
In 300 words, provide a written justification for your selection of best evidence. This justification should include:
- Type of evidence
- Level or strength of evidence
- Recency of evidence
- Relevance to your topic
- Any other feature that influenced your decision
- Contrast and compare articles
- Appropriate in-text citations
Using Evidence Section 2: Evidence summary
In 700 words, provide an evidence summary for your evidence question. This evidence summary should:
- Be written in essay format including brief introduction, body and brief conclusion.
- Summarise the key results of the studies as described by the authors.
- Compare and contrast the results of the three evidence articles.
- Discuss results in the context of your original question.
- Discuss results in the context of strength of evidence.
- Provide an overall recommendation from the evidence for the original scenario
Attach abstracts of three articles
- Copy and paste,or scan, the abstract of each article to the end of your assignment
- If there is no abstract, copy the first page of the article
- There are no formatting requirements for the abstracts.
- We just need to be able to read them as they appear in the paper originally.
Technical and formatting requirements
- Your Turnitin submission must have your student ID and name on the word document (.doc or .docx).
- Word limit is 1000 words +/- 10%, including citations but excluding the reference list.
- Use APA 7th citation and referencing style.
- Double spaced, 12 point font size, Times New Roman or Arial or Calibri font.Margins of 2.5cm (1 inch) all sides.
- Reference list after the essay.
- No coversheet is required.
- Penalties apply for excess word count >10%, late submission of 10% per day

Find best evidence in the literature to inform you as to what the effect of motivational interviewing is on smoking cessation in smokers.
SCENARIO 3
Stress as a healthcare professional seems like an inevitable part of the job. You wonder if you can reduce stress in your occupation by engaging in stress reduction interventions. Find the best literature to inform you as to whether stress reduction interventions assist health professionals to reduce stress.
SCENARIO 4
You have heard of animals assisting in the therapy of people with mental health issues. You are interested in whether animal-assisted therapies are effective for elderly patients with anxiety. Find the best evidence in the literature to inform you as to whether animal-assisted intervention can reduce anxiety in an elderly patient population.
