I found culture as a very interesting topic in module 1 where the culture was discussed in depth along with the different approached used for understanding culture. It was new to know that the culture may have varying definition as well as meaning based on different app
roaches. However, the core essence of culture remains same be it any approach. Further, the varying three theories of culture were studied and were being related to language that is how the language and culture are interrelated. This made the study about culture even more lucrative to me. I found the topic easy, clear to understand and very interesting as it was well explained with the help of real life examples every now and then.
Culture has definitions based on perspective of individual based on tangible as well as intangible things. One most common metaphor I studied for describing culture is iceberg where it was found that most people do emphasize and focus on tip of iceberg which is hardly 10 percent and rest of iceberg is under waterline. It was really amazing to know that most of leaders only addresses intercultural situation which are on tip of iceberg and ignore the one underneath surface level. This depicted how deep and vast this topic is in real (Benedict, 1934). A core and majorly focused definition of culture states it consists of shared values, assumptions and belief of a group of people who tend to learn from each other along with teaching to others about the attitudes, behavior as well as perspectives of them being correct way to act, think and feel. Culture can be thought or understood in 5 major distinct ways which are culture is shared, learned, systemic, symbolic and dynamic. This means culture can be majorly understood from any of perspective having same core but different meanings (Damen, 1987).
Levels of culture were also studied which is one of basic tenets of culture. There are broadly 5 levels of culture that helps to gain a clear insight and understanding. These are regional, team, national, individual and organizational. Sublevels in each culture are present in form of tangible and intangibles that helps to understand the culture from these approaches. Culture is expressed differently with the help of showing up in varying forms yet all these levels and forms shares and expresses three fundamental aspects of culture which are symbols, assumptions and values (Murphey & Asaoka, 2006).
Further it was studied that culture consists of implicit as well as explicit patterns for and of the behavior transmitted and required by symbols that helps to constitute the distinctive human group achievements, inclusion the artifacts embodiment. Mainly the culture consist the traditional ideas along with attached values making it as products of action at one hand and conditional element for future on the other hand...
