Introduction
Rape and other forms of sexual assaults have been labelled as taboo for centuries by social animals to minim
ize the seriousness of sexual victimization. There has been a plethora of myths about sexual assault and other sexual violence. However, modern feminists have come up with alternative perspectives to analyse sexual assault, its causes and consequences. Feminists have condemned the act of rape as a sexually motivated crime and argued that any kind of sexual violence is primarily an act of violence and cruelty against women. According to them, sexual assault is a tool to express extreme dominance and anger by men against women. Feminist scholars have given factual proofs that debunk a number of misconceptions about rape and the rape victims. In this discussion we will reflect upon the topic of sexual assault from two different theoretical perspectives.
Discussion
Liberal feminism stands on two correlated elements. The first one is that women are rational individuals eligible to universal human rights. According to first-wave liberal feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, the mind does not have any gender. In the backdrop of gender equality, liberal feminism advocates a society where women hold equal political power as men. A diversity of lifestyles among the women is the second aspect of liberal feminism.
Until few years ago, both the perspective on rape and the laws pertaining to it were reflected upon by the traditional sexist view of the relation between women and men (Brownhalls et al., 2020). From this view, the legal and social status of women are normally judged by their relations with their husband or if she is not married, to her brother or father. Even her rights and interests are included in those of men. If the woman is not married, her father and brother are presumed to have an interest regarding her virginity and that is a criterion of marrying her off. On the other hand, if she is married to someone, her husband holds exclusive sexual authority upon her.
