Name: __________________________________

Research Scenario:
Assume you are conducting a research about car noise. You randomly selected a sample of 36 cars from a dealer. There are five variables in this study:

1) Car ID;

2) Noise score (in dB);

3) Type of car (1=economy car, 2=luxury car);

4) Country of origin (1=U.S., 2=Japan);

5) Size of the car (1=small, 2=medium, 3= large).

Instructions:

1) Use the SPSS dataset on Blackboard (HW4 SPSS data.sav) to run APPROPRIATE tests to answer two research questions.

2) Run appropriate tests to answer the following research questions (RQ):

· RQ1: How dose

size of the car

influence

the noise score of the car
?

· RQ2: How do

type of car

and

country of origin

influence

the noise score of a car
?

Please Answer the Following Questions:

A. Based on the research questions, identify IV(s) and DV. Formulate your null hypotheses (H0) and research hypotheses (H1) for EACH research question. Please note that we will be conducting
two-tailed tests, so the hypotheses should be
non-directional.

For RQ1:

What are the IV(s) and DV (please identify and list each below): (1 point)

Write your null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis below. (1 point)

For RQ2:
What are the IV(s) and DV (please identify and list each below): (1 points)

Write your null hypotheses and alternative hypotheses below. (3 points)

*There are three sets of null and alternative hypotheses in total.

 Main effect of type of car (1point):

 Main effect of country of origin (1point):

 Interaction effect between type of car and country of origin (1point):

B. Run your statistical separately to answer RQs and test hypotheses. For each RQ, please:

1) Select the appropriate type of statistical test and run the analysis in SPSS;

1) Paste the SPSS outputs that contain the key information needed to answer each RQ;

2) Report and interpret your conclusion for each RQ (following the sample discussed in our class exercise).

For RQ1:

1) Which test do you plan to use, t-test, One-way ANOVA, or Two-way ANOVA? (1 point)

2) Run the test and paste SPSS outputs here (Descriptives Table, and t-test or ANOVA test Table). (1 point)

3) Do you need to run post-hoc tests? Explain why (in one sentence). If the answer is no, go to question (4); If the answer is yes, then run post-hoc tests and paste your outputs. (1 point)

4) Report and interpret your conclusion (Follow the sample discussed in class). (2 points)

For RQ2:

1) Which test do you plan to use, t-test, One-way ANOVA, or Two-way ANOVA? (1 point)

2) Run the test and paste SPSS outputs here (Between-subjects Factors, Descriptive Statistics Table, and ANOVA test Table (test of between-subjects effects). (1point)

3) Interpret the results of main effects and interaction effect (Follow the sample discussed in class). (6 points)

a) (2point) Is there a significant main effect of type of car on noise score of a car?

b) (2point) Is there a significant main effect of country of origin on noise score of a car?

c) (2point) Is there a significant interaction effect between type of car and country of origin on noise score of a car?

4) If there is significant interaction effect between type of car and country of origin on noise score of a car, please request a plot from SPSS and paste your plot here. (1point)
