The Hate You Give (2017)
The Hate U Give is a 2017 young adult book by Angie Thomas. Thomas's first novel originated as a short story she wrote in reaction to Oscar Grant's death at the hands of police officers when she was in college.
Starr's childhood best buddy Khalil is shot by a white police officer at a party in the opening scene of The Hate You Give. Starr is the only potential witness. There was nothing Khalil could have done, for only she knew the truth. The only one who can tell her story is she. Williamson, Starr's mostly white prep school, her neighbourhood, and the local gangs have all turned their attention on Starr. As she struggles to mourn and find her own voice, she faces challenges at school, including tests of her friendships and a rise in the frequency of terrifying happenings in Garden Heights.
The tale unfolds, revealing more about Williamson Starr, who does not use slang, and Starr, who leads a double existence. There is no mistaking the profound difference between these two ways of existence. Despite backlash from both camps, Starr decides to advocate for Khalil and tell his story in its entirety.
The Hate U Give deals with the concept of individuality. However, for the character to function as a person, that broad idea has to be fleshed up. Starr, like most people in her position, hopes to be accepted for who she is, despite the fact that she defies social expectations. Starr attempts to find her place in the world while being caught between two worlds: she is neither black nor white, nor is she particularly wealthy.

The film depicts Starr, a black high school student, as leading a double life: she attends the largely white prep school Williamson while residing in the predominantly black Garden Heights neighbourhood. One evening at a party, she bumps across an old friend named Khalil. Upon exiting the party, the cops halt the two individuals. Because he mistaken Khalil's hairbrush for a gun, a white police officer fatally shoots and kills Khalil. Starr...
