Dr. Roland Heisler is a senior physician on the health care team in the unit where Ms. Barbara McKenzie is the head night nurse. At about 7:00 pm, he is admitted to the unit as a patient with chest pain and is seen by a colleague, Dr. John Phillips. Several hours later, Dr. Heisler calls Barbara McKenzie into his room and asks her for a sleeping pill. She says that Dr. Phillips did not order a sleeping pill, reportedly because the patient said he did not need one. Dr. Heisler says that now he needs one. She puts in a call to Dr. Phillips, but he does not return it. Dr. Heisler is getting more and more aggravated and threatens to “go get one from the supply room” himself. Should she give it to him from the large supply of sleeping pills in her supply room? Defend why or why not, drawing on the duties, rights, and role issues discussed in your study of ethics so far.
