DISSCUSTION POST FROM OTHER STUDENT 1 Michelle Obama gave an incredible speech, explaining to the audience why they should vote for her husband, Barack Obama. She talked about his beliefs, pointing out, that you have to work hard in life, let your word be your bond, say and do want you mean and treat people with dignity and respect even if you don’t know them or disagree. Instead of working for Wall Street, his journey took him to the south side of Chicago to help ordinary people, like his single mother and grandparents, to achieve the American dream. As a result, he was able to set up job training programs to get people back to work, after school programs to keep kids safe and working block to block helping people elevate their families. As a Senator he helped pass tax cuts for hard working families, making sure women get equal pay for equal work and making sure servicemembers, returning home, get good jobs, benefits and healthcare, including mental healthcare. She also appealed to the audience by letting them know, what he did as a Senator, he will do for the American people. She talked about how people met in churches, schools etc. to march for change. Therefore, she wanted the audience to dedicate themselves by working together, finishing the work, started years ago by people who just want the American dream. For these reasons, she asked the voters to help fulfill the hopes of people from the past, present and future and stand together to elect Barack Obama to President of the United States of America. DISCUSSION FROM OTHER STUDENT 2 At the Democratic National Convention in 2008, Michelle Obama uses pathos by creating an image of a mother and daughter for herself to show she is part of a family, that that family is also the citizens of the U.S. because she knows how much family means in this country and how it plays a huge role in the American Dream. Her being a mother can also be her using ethos: a mother is caring, worrying and hoping the best for her children's future. In this way Michelle Obama is telling us that she can be trusted to care for the younger generation of this country because she has two daughters of her own and she is invested in the younger population. All of this is to show that she is a trustworthy person who's opinions and thoughts of her husband are true and that he is genuinely the best candidate at that time. She tells Barack Obama's early life after college and how ,instead of working at Wall Street where he could live a luxurious life, he spent his time helping neighborhoods who were struggling to make ends meet with the closing of steel plants. This builds the credibility of Obama: he is someone who cares wholeheartedly for the country's- not those who "make bank" but the unfortunate, the poor, those who need help to provide for their kids and family just like how the Obamas' parents and grandparents struggled too. This example shows that Obama is loyal and compassionate. She uses logos when she talks about all things Barack Obama's has done, and what his programs will target (ending the war, healthcare, improving education, etc.) once he's in office. She uses these facts to back up and expand on her husband's character.
