Introduction
The federal mandate introduced in 2014 requiring all healthcare providers and organizations to integrate Electronic Health Records (EHR) into their op
erations, as dictated by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, a component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signified a monumental shift towards the modernization of healthcare within the United States (Hansen & Baroody,2020). This directive was not merely a push towards technological advancement but a comprehensive strategy aimed at revolutionizing healthcare delivery by enhancing its quality, safety, and efficiency. Additionally, it aspired to reduce health disparities, encourage active participation from patients and their families, guarantee the security and privacy of patient health information, and foster improvements in care coordination and public health (Johnson, Neuss & Detmer,2021).
For healthcare managers, the transition to EHR systems brought to the fore several critical concerns associated with meeting the mandated deadline for EHR implementation:
Financial Implications and Costs
The financial aspect of transitioning to an EHR system poses a significant challenge, particularly for smaller practices or those situated in remote areas where resources are limited. The initial outlay for acquiring and installing an EHR system is substantial, covering not just the software but also any necessary hardware and infrastructure upgrades (Hansen & Baroody,2020). Although the HITECH Act provided financial incentives through Medicare and Medicaid programs to help offset some of these expenses, the fear of incurring ongoing costs related to maintenance, software updates, and the possible need for additional hardware or infrastructure improvements remains a considerable concern (Hansen & Baroody,2020). This financial strain necessitates careful planning and budgeting to ensure the long-term sustainability of the EHR system within the organization.
