REQUIRED WEB SITES Two websites are used in the course: Blackboard and SIMnet (McGraw-Hill). You are automatically registered for Bb; however, SIMnet requires a separate registration an access code. See Bb for more information about the SIMnet site and Registration for Simnet. The Blackboard site can be accessed via the San Jacinto College homepage or at the web address directly (https://sanjacinto.blackboard.com). Students are required to visit the website daily and to read all announcements for important information and updates. Announcements in Bb are emailed to the SJC email account so students will want to be sure they are receiving these messages. The course uses the McGraw-Hill SIMnet website for course assignments and exams. SIMnet requires a separate registration. See the Course Orientation, How to Get Started in SIMnet: Student SIMnet Registration for how to register in the SIMnet course. IMPORTANT Students will use this link to go to the SIMnet site when Bb is shut down: https://sanjac.simnetonline.com Detailed instructions for registering and logging in to SIMnet are on the Bb site. COURSE DESCRIPTON AND MATERIALS COURSE DESCRIPTION Business Computer Applications (BCIS 1305) is a great course! In this course you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office 2019. The course begins with a brief overview of Computer Concepts, Windows, and Microsoft Office 2019/365. These chapters are followed with a detailed study of the Office 2019/365 applications of Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. This course is 100% online. Do not purchase anything; this is an Open Books Plus course and you have already purchased your course materials. You can access your course materials on the first day of class. Nordell, Randy. Microsoft Office 365: In Practice, 2019 Edition, 1st edition, Copyright: 2020. ISBN10: 1260079902 or ISBN13: 9781260079906. This paper textbook is optional. For students who already have the course materials (ebook and access code) because they purchased the course materials outside of the college or because they are repeating the course, they will want to click on Course Materials link on Bb by the due date and Opt-Out so that they can receive a refund for the cost of the course materials. In order to master each of the lessons of the course, the following sequence of learning activities is recommended: · Skim the chapter for a general overview of the material before attempting assignments · Read the chapter, complete the SIMBook assignment, and complete the Guided Projects in SIMNet. NOTE: The Computer Concepts unit does NOT have a guided project. · Complete the 5-unit exams: 1 Computer Concepts, 1 Word, 1 Excel, 1 Access, 1 PPT) NOTE: Each exam you miss will lower your final grade at least one letter grade Our course is a 3-credit hour class but also has a lab component incorporated into the class. The lab does not meet separately. To ensure you successfully complete this course, plan your schedule and be consistent. Depending on your proficiency working with computers, in general, and the software we use, in particular, it might take you less time than others (but it also might take you more time). It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for you to work to the assignment due date schedule included at the end of this syllabus. If you fall behind, it is VERY DIFFICULT to catch up due to the amount of work required. The coursework is not especially challenging intellectually, but the quantity of work is challenging. The best way to learn a software program is to practice it, so there are a LOT of assignments to complete (over 50 assignments, plus 5 exams!). Students do not fail the class due to the difficulty of the course. They have failed the course because they did not complete the work required! SOFTWARE The course requires the use of Microsoft Office 365/2019, and most versions of Office 365/2019 include Word, Excel and PowerPoint but not Access. We will study Access in the SIMnet website, so students do not need the Access application on their computers. Please see Course Orientation on Bb for downloading Office 365/2019 at no additional cost. Or, contact San Jac Tech Support. TECHNOLOGY NEEDED FOR THE COURSE Please refer to the Technology Requirements tab under Course Orientation on Bb for valuable information about minimum requirements to access Bb, SIMnet, the San Jac network; information for MAC users; and required internet browsers. To utilize the technology in this course from off campus, students must have access to a computer with Internet access, Microsoft Office 2019 or Office 265 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Simnet online software. · Required Internet Browser: SIMnet does NOT work with Internet Explorer. DO NOT USE Internet Explorer to complete this course; you must use FIREFOX or GOOGLE CHROME or SAFARI. · Tablet Users: You must have Flash Player installed on your tablet in order to complete the Guided Projects and Capstone Projects. · Phone: Do not attempt to complete the course or exams using a phone. · Chomebooks are not compatible with SIMnet. Loaner computers are available from San Jac. Students needing a computer can fill out the student computer and software request in the link below. https://www.sanjacits.org/need-computer Once the form is received, a ticket will be created and sent to Procurement for review. For more information about receiving a loaner computer, please contact: Technical Support: (281) 998-6137. You also do not have to purchase Office 2019/365. The college provides this software to you at no charge. In this course, we use the words SIMnet “access” which refers to buying a subscription that allows you to work in SIMnet and the word “Access” which refers to the Access database software application that comes with Office 2019/365. Projects require the use of Microsoft Office 365 (same as MS Office 2019 Professional). If you do not currently have Microsoft Office 2019 Professional/or Office 365 installed on your computer, you can download Microsoft Office 365 from San Jacinto College at no additional cost.
