    Gwendolyn Brook’s ‘The Ballad of Rudolf Reed’ is a poem that brings out the frustration and anger associated with prejudice and discrimination in relation to racism. The poem repeatedly harps on a black man by the name Rudolf Reed and his family’s struggle to find a secure home for the themselves. The basic needs of Rudolf Reed and his family were minimum, they needed neither “berries” nor “bed”, they simply wanted “a house” where “at night a man in bed” can live comfortably. However, even after finding a roof over their heads, they suffered excruciatingly. Their “white only” neighbourhood repeatedly pelted “rock” as “big as two fists” on the windows of their house. After extreme assault, Rudolf Reed lost his nerve and with “a beastly butcher knife” murdered four white men. The poem’s symbolism brings out the regular struggle of every black man or as the white man calls Rudolf “Nigger”. The dark and gloomy surroundings are suggestive of their pain and sacrifices, just to lead a safe and secure...
