1. What is a safe room? Why is it important to include a safe room in a security plan?
A safe room is a fortified room that is strong enough to provide for a shelter in case of
any natural calamity, war or home invasion. The safe room is equipped with communication
system including a phone connection and a radio transmitter, so that the police can be contacted
in event of an issue (FEMA P-320, 2012). It might also have alarm system and security camera
coverage. Emergency equipments like arms and tools for self defense, gas mask, first aid, etc.
also need to be there in the strong room. It is recommended by the US Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) to have simple and sturdy strong room in office or residence
(FEMA P-320, 2012). The strong room can be a small one but needs to be strongly grounded
with a concrete structure or placed in the basement. The walls of the strong room should be
strong enough to withstand torrential storms or other catastrophic events (FEMA P-320, 2012).
The importance of strong room in security plan is as below. It would provide almost
complete protection to individuals from getting affected in a way that might be fatal. For
instance, in incidence of torrential storms like tornadoes and hurricanes, if the people and take
shelter in the strong rooms, it can save them from getting hurt and protect them from death
(FEMA P-320, 2012). Having a strong room in ones house or office reduces the stress and
anxiety of individuals in case of such catastrophic events. In case of outbreak of war or shoot
out, it can protect people. Children and women can be saved from adult attackers and robbers by
having a strong room as they can escape in that room in case of emergency.
