Discussion Post #3
Frankenstein has a complex structure known as aframe narrative. Rather than reading the story from one character’s perspective or point-of-view, we are multiple narratives embedded in one another. So far we have seen three major narratives:
- Walton’s story about his quest to the Artic told through letters
- Frankenstein’s story told from his perspective
- The monster telling his own story about his life after creation
For this response, you will be placed in a group of 5-6. You willautomatically be put into a group, so you do not need to join one; when you post, it will be in the right place! After writing and submitting your paragraph, you will be responsible for responding to one of your group members.
Before you get started writing, be sure to spend 15 minutes or so, if you have not already, toread over some basic terminology about point-of-view(Links to an external site.). It’s useful information to know when analyzing literature and will help get you started thinking about the importance of narration in your response.
Submission Guidelines
1)Write and post on why you think Shelley decided to have multiple narrators in the novel. Be specific here! You want to dive a little deeper than just saying that “everyone has a story to tell.” It might help to reference one of the main themes we’ve seen the book develop so far: science, knowledge, creation, family, solitude and revenge. You might also consider the different ways that Frankenstein's life is similar to his monsters. As always, use a specific example or quote in your response to support your interpretation.
2)Second,comment on one of your group member's posts by clicking "reply" to the message they posted. In your comment, add an additional example to what they posted or explain why you have a different perspective than what they posted. When you respond to a classmate, choose someone has not yet received a reply; if everyone already has, add a second reply to anyone of your choosing.
Note: You will not be able to see your classmates posts until you post, so do not delay submitting your response!
