As discussed last class, Mary Shelley wrote during the Romantic Era (commonly known as “Romanticism”), a literary, artistic, musical and philosophical movement in Europe toward the end of the 18thcentury. Partly in reaction against the dehumanizing effects of the Industrial Revolution, Romantics turned toward deep individual emotion and the natural world.


One of the most important concepts of Romanticism was thesublime, which was highly influential to Shelley’sFrankenstein. For today’s post, I would like youread a brief article(Links to an external site.)that explains what exactly the sublime is as well as introduces you to a writer who helped develop it, Edmund Burke. You should also read theshort overview of Romanticism(Links to an external site.)that I posted.


Once you’ve read the article and looked at the paintings, writetwo paragraphsanswering the following questions: 1) In your own words, what is the sublime? 2) What is an example of the sublime inFrankenstein, and why do you think it is important? You might refer to one of Shelley’s descriptions of nature or Frankenstein’s reaction to his “creation.”
