Discussion 1
In Still Life with Plaster Cast, the viewer sees a painting-within-a-painting.
Identify and describe another work in your text that uses a similar
approach. Explain why you think an artist might choose to re-paint a
painting into his or her work. In what ways is it the same paintin
g? In what
ways does it become different?
In every period of artistic innovations there are geniuses who change the face of
art forever and Cezanne was one of such genius. The concept of still life which was
masterly incorporated in the artwork of Cezanne revolutionized the art of painting. In
the Still Life with Plaster Cast, Cezanne introduced the concept of still life or still
painting within a painting. Such trend can also be noticed in Flowers, 1901 by French
maestro Pablo Picasso. The projection of inanimate subject matters like flower vase and
the flower can be noticed in Picasso’s painting and such depiction is quite attuned with
that of Cezanne. Looking at the painting a true admirer of art can find similarity
between Picasso’s Flowers and Cezanne’s Still Life with Plaster Cast and among myriads
points of similarities one can recognize the similarity of dazzling colors and shadings
between the two masterpieces. Moreover, both the paintings of Cezanne and Picasso
depict a kind of symbolism the notion of which is more philosophical than mundane.
The trend of repainting a painting or a sculptured model is to be found in some of
the major artists of some famous artistic periods. In my opinion, myriads of artists
choose and have chosen such method to view objects as shapes that can be frequently
transformed and reassembled. Such scope renders a feeling of being a creator and such
feeling is obvious to dominate myriads of artists whose creations are fruits of joy. To

deviate the mode of painting from functioning as descriptive to a form that can be
denoted as symbolic of the colors and shapes used within, some of the painters
deliberately did choose the strategy of repainting a painting. Such ploy not only gives the
painting a new life but also renders a kind of spatial organization to the newly created
artwork.
Painting a still model or another painting within a new painting actually changes
the symbolic qualities of the painting which has been painted. Though one can claim
that the form of the painting or the model remains the same in the new painting and
hence, there are seldom any changes, changes do occur. Moreover, it is obvious that as
the paintings are being repainted the essential qualities and representations of the
original painting are changed and through the skills of the painter repainting an original
painting within his/her painting the objects within the painting gets a new life with new
philosophical qualities.
Cézanne returned again and again to paint his mountain. Explain why you
think an artist might choose to repaint a subject. In what ways is it the same
painting? In what ways does it become different?
In a recurrent manner Cezanne used...
