The name “16
Candles” pops up in the minds of any fairly movie-addicted person whenever they try to think of any teen romance film. It is one of the of the cult classics in the genre of coming of age comedy film directed by John Hughes (Labrador, 2018).
Sexual Misconduct in the Movie
This film was undoubtedly quite a worthwhile movie in its time. However, on seeing this film now, in this modern era, considering all the social aspects of the present scenario, “16 Candles” poses us with a lot of questions throwing sensitive chains of thoughts in the minds of the viewers, regarding sexual misconduct and assassination of a lot of characters. There are a few things with direct reference to the story, which would not have been received, in a positive sense through the eyes of 21st century public.
Seen from the perspective of a story, “16 Candles” involves a lot of body shaming among the characters of the movie. Firstly, Sam’s brother in the movie comments on her bra size and about her physical features; even though its sentence coming out from the mouth of a child the mentality portrayed is definitely not healthy. Next comes in her grandparents, who show a considerable amount of criticism about her body instead of the fact that it is her birthday. That is indeed a very dull representation of a proper attitude being displayed towards the juniors of the house by the elders.
Moreover, the statements made upon her body and the fact that they actually came from her grandparents is definitely not funny. As viewed by Bartlett, Clarke and Cover (2019), the concept of body shaming does not only stick around to that of boys made upon girls. It gets carried on to a scene, which takes place in the locker room, where Sam and her best friend Randy makes explicit and definite remarks about the body of another girl Caroline and makes judgmental comments about her.
