The idea of an international exhibition for the Centennial Exhibition was not initial. These meetings can be linked to the trade shows of the medieval period, at least. The promoters of the Centennial Exhibition quite likely had that in view the fairs that had already been conducted since before the mid-nineteenth century. As mentioned by Lannon, the International Exhibition of Manufactures, Arts and Goods of the Land and Resources took part in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park in honor of the United States' one hundredth year of independence.
