Introduction
United States is one of the biggest and powerful countries in the world. The developed nation with tremendous growth option and the dream of every individual around the world to be citizen of this dynamic country. Besides positive things, negative aspects do follow. The one negative aspect is crime rate. The crime can be related to any aspect of the society whether it is discrimination based on color and ethnicity, violence in form of offending human rights, murder, theft, blackmailing, robbery, prostitution or homicides.
These crimes contributing in creating a doubt about the security of life in the country for locals and migrants. The police who is responsible for creating law and order in the society are looked with doubtful outlook regarding their contribution. They are questioned about their actions and blamed for misconduct. The reasons are many, which need to be discussed before passing the blame game.
The dis-proportionally high number shootings, which are conducted, by police and the reasons behind them need to be investigated before reaching to any conclusion. The pressure of creating safe environment does cost lives but to save others’ lives it becomes essential to create respect for law and fear of being punished.
Crime Rate and Statistics in US
The topic crime is very broad and covers all acts, which are punishable under law. The overall crime rate in US is higher as compared to other developed countries (Statista, 2020). The crime is divided into various categories to have better understanding. There are two types of crimes mainly property crime and violent crime. There are higher number of property crimes leading to 7.2 million whereas violent crimes are 1.2 million (Statista, 2020).
Considering only geographic location would not solve the purpose so considering crime rate per 100,000 residents will do justice (Statista, 2020). The higher rate of crimes are observed in New Mexico and Alaska whereas New England witnessed lowest rates. In 2019, the forcible rape rates were 29.9 per 100,000 people (Statista, 2020). Similarly, the robbery rate was 81.6 robbery cases per 100,000 of the population (Statista, 2020).
The aggravated assault rate was 250.2 cases per 100,000 (Statista, 2020). The reported murder and non-negligent manslaughter rate was five per 100,000 (Statista, 2020). In 2019, the nationwide larceny theft rate was 1,549.5 larceny cases per 100,000 of the population (Statista, 2020). The reported burglary rate was 340.5 burglary cases per 100,000 of the population (Statista, 2020). 12013898 were the total number of violent cases in US and highest in District of Columbia (Statista, 2020).
Crime Rate and Statistics in Other Similar Countries
The homicides happened in other countries are in much lesser number. These are developed countries. Australia have 1.4 per 1 million, New Zealand 1.6 per 1 million, Denmark 2.7 per 1 million, Germany 1.9 per 1 million, Austria 2.2 per 1 million, Netherlands 3.3 per 1 million, Sweden 4.1 per 1 million, Finland 4.5 per 1 million, Belgium 6.8 per 1 million, Luxembourg 6.2 per 1 million, Canada 5.1 per 1 million (Vox, 2015).
These countries has much stricter rules for keeping guns with individuals. The liberty of having alcohol at an early age is not permissible. In addition, the number of crimes reported and tracked by police are higher in these countries and sheds lights on efficiency of their part. The population of the countries all matter a lot. These countries does not hold much concentration of population at one place (Vox, 2015).
The property crime rate in Canada are higher in comparison to the US (Vox, 2015). The policy changes happened in these countries is not that frequent as compared to US (Vox, 2015). The OECD countries have their own set of problems prevailing in their countries, which decide the crime rate. England has most appreciated gun control system, which results in lesser crimes of homicides in the country (Vox, 2015).
Comparing the Crime Scenario between US & Other Nations
The crime status reported in various countries and the pattern, in which they happened are different. The population of these countries as compared to US have major difference. The geography, the demographics all vary to a major extent. As per the data we have studied above the number of crimes reported the website of these countries is completely different (UNODC, 2019). The numbers, which came in picture are through surveys, which held in different platforms.
Every country look a particular crime from different perspective. For example, in some countries theft has stricter rules in comparison to assault. The serious and common assault may have huge difference of outlook in terms of legal jurisdictions (UNODC, 2019). Hence, the comparison between the numbers can type might not hold same ground. The levels, at which these crimes are reported in US and other developed countries as well as the way policing is done also different (UNODC, 2019).
The insurance coverage if allows to report the matter then the reporting of cases will be increased. However, if does not include such provisions the might true numbers will not be there (UNODC, 2019). The number of police station and its coverage in accordance with area and population varies a lot. The populations trust in police is important. If there are trust issue then the records might witness lower reporting of crimes (UNODC, 2019).
The social, political and economic situations in the countries are also different. In some countries women are not allow to go outside without family members permission and also the kind of crime such as rape or assault may put additional restrictions on them. The bribery and corruption levels in the country also affect the amount of crimes noted. Many cases are pressed just because of this and the US, have highest level of corruption existence in it (UNODC, 2019).
The pitfalls due to these differences can be misleading and comparisons may not hold to be reliable. The number of illegal migrants entering the country through fair and unfair means also add to the crime numbers. Recently United States witnessed this and the action taken by President, which also result in more number of crimes against civilians (UNODC, 2019).
