Eventually these people begin to accept their labels as personal identities, locking them further into lives of crime and deviance. People begin to view themselves as others do: troublemaker, drug addict, criminal. Edwin Lemert suggests that people who accept labels are involved in secondary deviance while primary deviants are able to maintain an undamaged identity.
