PREVALENCE:
A type of mental retardation caused by extra genetic
material in chromosome 21, the estimated
incidence of
Down Syndrome has been found to be between 1 in 1,000 to
1 in 1,100 live births globally (World Health Organization,
2017). It must be noted that, “Each year approximately 3,000
to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome disorder
and it is believed there are about 250,000 families in the
United States of America who are affected by Down
Syndrome” (World Health Organization, 2017).
TYPICAL AGE OF DIAGNOSIS:
It has been found that Down Syndrome is usually identified
at the time of birth and in some cases it has been detected
shortly after birth (). Physical characteristics are the basic
source of diagnosis among babies born with down
syndrome (NADS, 2016).

DETERMINING FACTORS FOR
DIAGNOSIS:
Down Syndrome can be diagnosed by screening tests,
which may include ultrasound and blood test during first or
second trimester (WebMD, 2017).
Then there are diagnostic tests for determining factors for
developing Down Syndrome, and such tests include
chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis (WebMD, 2017).
It is noteworthy that the diagnostic tests are only ordered
by doctors if screening tests render abnormal results...
