Directions: Write a 3-5 page essay on ONE of the following essay questions. The paper should be doubled-spaced, 12-point font, and in Times New Roman. An ‘A+’ paper would be one that answers all the questions asked completely and thoroughly, as well as gives a well reasoned argument for your own opinion on the topic. If you have them, you may use primary sources of the philosophers mentioned in the essay topics, but only using your textbook and my lectures as references will suffice for an ‘A+’ paper. Don’t forget a works cited page! The essay will be due April 11th at the beginning of class.Midway through the discussion in Plato’s dialogue the Euthyphro, Socrates claims that piety can only be one of two possibilities: “Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?” Explain the two possibilities and why Socrates believes that only one of these options is plausible. Do we ever get a clearer definition of piety? Relate Socrates’ conclusions on piety to the content of his defense in the Apology. How is his argument about piety related to his claims that he knows nothing, we should always “search” for truth, and that the care of the soul is what is most important. Is this knowledge?
