Environmental Impact Statement (2,000–2,500 words)

Your manager, Claire DeAir, has asked you to select and research one topic from her email (in the Supporting Materials section) and write the following components of an environmental impact statement:

  • Purpose and Need (approximately 500 words)

    • Define the issue or problem.

    • Describe the social, cultural, and historical significance of the issue to society.

    • Justify why you are proposing action be taken to address the issue.

    • Explain what you expect action to achieve and/or potentially resolve.

  • Alternatives, Including the Proposed Action (1,000–1,250 words)

    • Rigorously explore and objectively evaluate at least five reasonable actions from different fields of study (e.g., ecology, meteorology, biology, botany, geology, physics) that could address the issue and satisfy the need.

      • Include “no action” as a sixth action.

    • Propose and defend a preferred action or course of actions, specifically discussing how it's innovative. An innovative idea is an original, new, or creative method for approaching a practical problem. It must be realistic or practical and supported by research.

      • Explain the reasons for eliminating each alternative action.

  • Environmental Consequences (500–750 words)

    • Examine how each action under consideration would impact the environment of the affected area(s).

      • Analyze the environmental effects of each action.

        • Discuss the energy requirements (if applicable) and the conservation potential of each action.

        • Describe the effect of each action on natural and depletable resources.

      • Analyze the human effects of each action.

    • Assess the direct and indirect effects of the reasonable actions and their significance.

      • Avoid assessing the impacts (long-term, near-term, certain, uncertain), since readers may value these differently.

Defining the Issue or Problem
Plastic waste is the accumulation of the plastic object, which includes plastic bottles, garbage, polyethene, any kind of plastic products in the Earth’s environment that adversely affect wildlife, marine creatures as well as human being. Plastics are inexpensive products at the same durable too, which make them adaptable for different uses, which influences human being to produce a number of plastic products.
The plastic wastage blocks the landfills, foul the oceans, affect the human health, kill the animals and create harm for the sea creatures and many more. As stated by Chow, So, Cheung and Yeung (2017), through plastic pollutions several whales were dying, turtles were tortured and fishes are feeling suffocated in such environment. Several concerns were raised for fossil fuels, by which the plastics are produced. It is a serious challenge all over world as it is harming every species on the Earth.
Social, Cultural and Historical Significance of the Issue to Society
As per social as well as cultural aspect, we buried down the dead bodies and threw them in river by wrapping it with plastic cover. We also worship God and goddess and after completion of the festival, we threw the idols into the river. In these ways, we are throwing garbage, polythene plastics and plastics bottles every day. Now millions and millions of plastics are lying under water, which is terribly affecting the innocent marine creatures.
Due to plastic’s affordable and pliable properties, it has become a popular manufacturing material since the end of World War 2. Plastic waste not only causes harm to the marine creatures but also it has a significance effects on the land and on climate change. As mentioned by National Science Foundation (2021), several lakes are losing oxygen as planets are warming.
According to the recent report, the production of plastic contributes to the greenhouse gases, which is equivalent to 850 million tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Plastic pollution also affect the animals and humans on land. As mentioned in National Science Foundation (2021), due to pollution the floating brown seaweeds known as Sargassum, which has been growing in low water nutrients in the North Atlantic Ocean now is being found into a toxic dead zone.
Rationale for Proposing Remedial Actions to be Taken
The purpose and the need for action was clearly explained in the notice, which was intended to prepare an environmental impact statement that is published in Federal Register on 11th May 2007. The main purpose of this action is to improve upon the 2000 rule by accessing a planning process that is understandable and it is within the Agency’s potentiality to implement.
It is also consistent with the potentialities of NFS land and as well identifies the strategic and the programmatic nature of planning and meeting the requirements of NFMA (National Forest Management Act). Secondly, it also aims to response to the court order of 30 March 2007. This environmental impact statement was prepared to evaluate and analyze the impact of 2005 rules in accordance with NEPA.
Potential Outcome of the Proposed Action
The main motto of the proposal is to reduce the pollution rate and create a healthy atmosphere. Therefore, it is obviously expected that the proposal action after implementation would reduce the pollution rate and provide a healthy balanced environment. It will identify the problems and there after find out the solution. Increasing dependence on research and development of the scientists can help to achieve the research mission. Identification and analysis of ecological, economic and social components of sustainability.
Alternatives and Proposed Action
Before planning a proposal for action in order to reduce the plastic pollution and create a healthy environment, the action should follow certain strategy in order to meet the goal. Firstly, the planning should be strategic in nature. The purpose of the plan should focus mainly on the affected areas such as forest, ocean,...
