Difference between Afrocentrism and Eurocentrism
Posted onJune 25Both afrocentrism and eurocentrism are concepts that are largely utilized in the America context; they are not applicable in most other regions of the globe. Their use is chiefly on the basis of the origins of the people of America who make up two of the major groups. Afrocentrism is a concept that strives to learn the African-American culture. Afrocentricity deals with African agency and is a pan-African concept in history, philosophy, and culture. On the other hand, Eurocentrism is a routine of perceiving matters with a European/Western-centered understanding. This term rose during the era of decolonization in the late 20thcentury. Unlike afrocentrism that is mainly viewed in the American contest, eurocentrism was prevalently used on the international stage in the 19thcentury because of European colonialism and imperialism. Hence, the core difference between the two concepts is that they are held by different individuals who originate from distinct cultures (Sertima, 1987).ReferenceSertima, I. V.
