In 1809 Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky. Both of his parents couldn’t read or write, Abraham had no help at home so decided to educate his self by reading borrowed books. When Lincoln was only nine years old his mother passed away. His father a carpenter and a farmer remarried and moved his family farther west to Illinois. As a young Adult he worked as a storekeeper , soldier and a flatboat navigator. When he was 25 years old he was elected to the local government in Springfield and he earnt the name “Honest Abe” Abraham Lincoln did believe that slavery was morally wrong. In 1854 Abraham told everyone in a speech quiet clearly he didn’t know what should be done about slavery. Even though Lincoln saw himself working alongside the abolitionists of a common anti slavery cause he did not count himself among the. It is said that Abraham Lincoln didn’t believe black people should have the same right as white people. Although he may have argued and quoted the founding fathers phrase “All men are created equal” applied to both white and black people, this didn’t mean he thought the should have the exact same political and social rights. His full views on this became clear during a debate series in 1858 against his nemesis Stephan Douglas who had recently accused Abraham of supporting “negro equality”. Lincoln then stated “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favour of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and Black races.” He continued to say that he opposed black people having the right to vote, serve in juries, hold office and to intermarry the whites. Lincoln was opposed to slavery, he was opposed to the unpleasant abuse of minorities which was common and for the most part lawful at the time, in those ways, he rose above the acknowledged understanding of his time and place. He was also a politician and a down to earth individual he was concerned with keeping the United States from fragmenting and with working out some kind of compromise that would permit the north and south to coexist. He needed to abolish subjugation and protect the rights of all races, but his first commitment was to the Union, and he accepted (as did most individuals at that point) that genuine balance between races was fundamentally inconceivable. He accepted these things since the position he was in requested that he accept them.
