Project Brief
Purpose & Rationale: The project is about implementation and setting up of Coles Secures sites for online customer fulfilment centers (CFC). These facilities will be set-up in the states of Melbourne and Sydney. It will also enable the Coles online customers to derive the benefits of market leading range and best services. It will be an automated single pick service technology where the customers can order from Coles’s online grocery platform and emphasize on delivery solution to Australia.
Project Title: Coles online fulfilment centers in Sydney and Melbourne for the customers
Project Purpose: The purpose of the project is to analyse whether the project will be completed by 2023 and how far these online fulfilment centers will be able to meet the rising customer demands of Australia.
Background & Strategic Plans: Coles will partner with UK based Ocado Group plc, where it will try to establish the world’s largest online grocery, mechanized single pick fulfilment expertise and home delivery solution in Australia. With this strategic plan and implementation of Ocado model it will enable Coles to provide its customers great range of superior and excellence customer services and will augment the service capacity towards its online customers.
Priority: This will enable the need of Coles for the second century sustainable growth opportunity through enhancement of technology and reduction of waste and increasing the team members’ safety and security.
Related Projects: In relation to the Coles project there will be an agreement with Optus which will enable high speed access of broadband services in all its stores. There will also be recruitment of new HR’s finance team and new procurement system under SAP. For its pick-up and delivery there will be collaboration and partnership with Uber Eats and eBay.
Project Client/ Owner: The owner of this project will be Coles Ltd themselves.
Project Sponsor: Coles has agreed with Charter Hall Group for long term leases on the two new sites of Melbourne and Sydney to implement the CFC centers. These centers are the Horsley Drive     Business Park in Wetherill Park in New South Wales and the Midwest Logistics Hub in Truganina, Victoria.
Project Manager: The project will be installed, maintained and management of the automation equipment in the CFC will be conducted by Ocado. But the project manager will be from Coles.
Project Status: The project will be started soon as the agreement has already been signed in 2019 to build the automated CFC project within four years one in Sydney and other in Melbourne.
Special Provisions: This deal is exclusive in Australia as long as certain conditions are adhered to. It also benefits Ocado to smoothly agree with US Kroger Co, Sobeys in Canada; Casino in France and ICA in Sweden for implementation of the automated CFC in their organization.

    Online customers cannot avail the various facilities and offers available in the Coles store
    It is assumed that the online customer since unable to be contact in store will be contacted through email, messages etc. for informing them with the best offers and facilities available in Coles
    The various constraints will be lower footfall in the Coles Stores; network issues may impact the online services.
    It will generate employment facilities during the construction of the two facilities with 600 jobs and additional 600 jobs in technological skilled roles after its completion
    There will be less opportunity for the candidates with less technical knowledge as the entire CFC automation process will be technology based.
    The jobs will enable the candidates to survive and live a livelihood for people who lost their jobs during Covid-19.
    It needs to be supervised whether the jobs provided are a part of Coles sustainable development program for hiring the Australian aborigines.
    The two centers in Sydney and Melbourne will have 1000 robots each which will take order online from the customers.
    There will be less human intervention and it will be limited to the approval and pick up of the order to the appropriate customer.
    It will increase the efficiency and augment fast delivery of the goods and provide prompt services to the customers.
    1000 robots in each center will reduce the human intervention as a result there is chances of cut in the jobs in Coles.

    Charter Hall Group
    They are the one who will build and erect the Customer fulfilment centers on the two new sites in Melbourne and Sydney
    Client as they are responsible for erection of the facilities in the two centers
    If they are able to create an appropriate facility as projected they will get more orders for construction of more such CFC facilities in Coles.
    Ocado Group
    Ocado group is responsible for implementation of the automated CFC internal control system in collaboration with Charter Hall Group
    Client as they are the UK based company highly specialised in installation of such automated CFC and robotic system in various other companies
    If they can deliver a sound and effective online CFC system in Coles they can bag orders of installing the same automated facilities in big companies like Kroger, Sobeys, Casino and ICA.

    There is requirement of eight manual handling process operations in Coles. Installation of CFC will reduce the manual handling operation process to just two.
