Develop a case study about an ethical issue in an online context and provide a short reflection on the issues you think that it raises. A poster presentation usually occurs at a conference. People display posters of their research and may provide a short summary of the research (2-3 minutes). You will be assessed on a poster presentation of your case study (the poster and the presentation) and your research notes. Your notes should address the issues for the case study using the worksheet provided (the Ethical analysis of case studies worksheet in the further instructions folder).





  • Develop your case study using various sources, including journalistic articles, academic articles on the general issue, government, non-government and industry reports, policy papers, social media, and screenshots. You should include notes from the required readings on values and ethics.



  • Present your case study on a poster (to be cut and pasted into a Jamboard for display in the presentation)



  • Include citations and a reference list in the Harvard style. Use page numbers for quotations, paraphrases, and the source of ideas or information. Do not include citations or references to sources that you have not looked up and read yourself. Learn how to cite secondary sources.

Two pressure cooker bombs detonated at the finish line of the Boston Ma
rathon in April 2013, shocking the entire globe and leaving three people dead and several others seriously injured. A community was in shock following this horrific incident, and law enforcement authorities immediately began a large manhunt to find and capture the bomber culprits. A serious case of online shaming took place, exposing the evil side of the internet age amid the commotion and need to find the criminals.
The Misidentification of Sunil Tripathi: Sunil Tripathi, a 22-year-old Brown University student who had been missing for several weeks previous to the Boston Marathon, was at the center of this terrifying episode. The upheaval that followed demonstrated the explosive potential of social media and the negative effects of online shaming. It all started when online detectives, mostly on Reddit and Twitter, launched a spontaneous investigation to find the Boston Marathon bombing perpetrators. They went through the incident's photos and videos in an effort to find any leads. They started to make associations between the suspects and anyone who had even the slightest resemblance in their want to help law enforcement.
The Rapid Spread of False Claims: As the internet manhunt intensified, Reddit users started to post images of Sunil Tripathi, alleging that he resembled one of the people seen in the CCTV film. This innocent comment suddenly turned into a flurry of rumors and charges. On Twitter, thousands of individuals started to discuss and spread the bogus accusations as Sunil's name started to trend. The results were immediate and disastrous. Sunil's family was thrown into the center of an international internet shaming campaign while already dealing with the heartbreaking mystery of his absence. The charges and false information persisted despite the utter lack of any proof connecting Sunil to the blast.
The Tragedy: Sunil's struggle tragically took a tragic turn when his lifeless body was found in the Providence River. He had committed suicide after giving in to the severe psychological agony brought on by the web campaign that falsely accused him of participating in a terrorist event. Sunil Tripathi's misidentification serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of online shaming and the possible real-world repercussions it might have. Due to his abduction, Sunil was already in a precarious situation and was made the target of a continuous and pointless online witch hunt. Instead of being tied with baseless charges and widespread condemnation, his name could have stood for hope and the pursuit of answers.
The Ethical Dimension: Serious ethical issues are brought up by this occurrence. Fundamental ethical norms were breached by the hasty rendering of judgments, the disdain for the legal maxim "innocent until proven guilty," and the disseminating of false material.
