Determine the tower height required for performing the following operation. Consider a gas flow rate of 0.25 mol/min in a tower with a column crosssectional area (empty) of A = 1 m2contacting a nonvolatile oil with a flow rate of 0.1 mol/min at a temperature of 25 ◦C. The gas contains an undesired organic contaminant at a mole fraction of 1% that must be reduced to 0.1% mole fraction. Experiments show that the volatile contaminant has a partition coefficient of m = 0.3. The choices of column diameter and liquid flow rate are made to maintain good gas–liquid contacting without flooding and will depend on the choice of packing and the properties of both streams, as well as the pressure drop, as will be discussed further in Chapter 8.
