Introduction
Walmart was founded by Sam Walton in the year 1962 in Arkansas. It was previously a small dime store. Walmart is now one of the biggest retailer of USA and internationally. They presently have more t
han 11500 stores worldwide. Most of their customer base is above 45 years. They have recently launched the ecommerce online platform to compete with their competitors and maximize their revenue. Walmart is known for its everyday low cost products and services and have the best product in terms of quality. They offer various discounts schemes even on those low cost products. Their main target is the middle class society of the world. They are also planning to target the rich and the higher middle class people of the society by storing a wide range of costly merchandise. They provide financial services also in the form of payment and billing services. They are the largest grocery seller in USA. They merchandise in clothes, electronics, medicines and photography services. Recently they have developed an application on mobile where the customers can search for their desired item by typing just the English alphabetical name. Their current revenue is $524 billion and is at the top spot of retail giants in USA and worldwide. They have also invested and collaborated with online retail giants and ecommerce companies in many countries to enter the retail segment of that country. This will help them to make their footholds strong internationally.
History of Walmart
Sam Walton was the founder of Walmart. He founded the company in the year 1962 with its first store opened in Arkansas, USA. After ending the short term military service in the year 1945, Sam and his wife opened a variety store. Later they moved to Bentonville and opened a dime store which they named as Walton’s 5&10 on the downtown square. Inspired by the early success of the low cost dime store Sam Walton opened Walmart.
Sales & Profits
Walmart’s annual sale for 2019 was $514.405 billion which is an increase of 2.81% from 2018. Presently, the year-on-year sale for the twelve months ending 31st January 2020 was $523.964 billion. It is an increase of 1.86% for same period in the previous year.
The net profit of the company for 2019 was $6.67 billion, a 32.37% decline from 2018. The twelve month net profit of the company year-on-year basis ending 31st January 2020 is $14.881 billion which is an increase of 123.1% for the same period in the previous year.

The President and CEO of Walmart Inc. is Doug McMillon. Walmart have transformational as well as transactional leadership style. In Walmart Inc. transformational style it the founder of Walmart, Sam Walton who is an example of visionary and transformational leader. Now, if we discuss about the transactional leadership style in Walmart, the leaders are responsible for planning and executing the strategies for running the daily business of the store.
