Description of the MATLAB Project
The area of medical imaging, as an area of clinical application, is an emerging field, as well as in intraoperative navigation of three-dimensional imaging, although there is still not enough practical applicability. The proposed theme fits into this problem, with particular application in the intervention in rectal cancer surgery.
The pelvis is a confined cavity, with a very limited working space. A three-dimensional understanding of its structures is therefore essential when planning and performing rectal cancer surgery. A 3D reconstruction tool for the images, usually collected by NMR for surgical strategy, would be essential to perform a safer surgery and with better oncological results.
There are already some tools for preoperative 3D reconstruction. It is intended to improve existing tools, in order to allow their application in a real intraoperative navigation scenario.
It is intended that the student develops three-dimensional reconstruction of pelvic MRI images of rectal cancer staging, with clear identification of the tumor and adjacent structures relevant to the surgical approach - such as vessels, nerves and bone limits.
