Describe the structure and function of the physiological systems studied and explain how these respond to sport and exercise.
Explain the integration of the physiological systems studied during sport and exercise.
Explain how the limitations of physiological response may limit sport and exercise performance.

Assignment Brief:

The skeletal muscle is the site at which physical work is generated this work being consequent on the conversion of chemical energy to mechanical energy. The human muscle is particularly well adapted to facilitate this conversion and rapidly meet the demands of exercise. However in order to sustain physical activity of more than the shortest duration this energy conversion is dependent on a constant supply of oxygen and the removal of metabolic by products. A failure of either of these would lead to the rapid termination of activity. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems play a key role in the transport of oxygen and metabolic by products to and from the muscles during exercise. In this essay you are to consider how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems respond during exercise to ensure adequate oxygen delivery and removal of metabolic by products. Give particular emphasis to how these responses arise in an integrated way and the control mechanisms responsible for ensuring that any response of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems closely match the metabolic demands of the active muscles.
