Introduction
Natural disasters are uncontrollable and sudden, the 2011 Japan tsunami was is no exception to this. Tsunamis are one of the most disastrous natural calamities, from which humanity might have to suffer as 15,899 people died, 6,157 were reported injured and 2,529 people were missing after 2011 Japan tsunami. This tsunami was reported as one of the most havoc natural disaster in the history of humanity. There were numerous geographical and climatic factors, which could cause a tsunami and this paper will emphasize upon the rationales behind, tectonic movement, history and scope of the event.
Tectonic Cause Behind 2011 Japan Tsunami
It would be essential to consider that the japan tsunami was followed by earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku in 2011 and this was a 9.0–9.1 magnitude. Epicenter of this earthquake was reported to be 72 km (45 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and it lasted for approximately 6 minutes. The original location of this earthquake has a complex tectonic arrangement because the pacific plate has been reported to sub duct under the plate beneath northern Honshu. Further, it has been noted that pacific plate usually moves at the rate to 8 to 9 cm every year and dips under the underlying plates of Honshu. This builds large amount of elastic energy and the motion continues to push the lower plate down until this energy causes seismic event or seismic slip-rupture event.
This earthquake allowed the movement of Japanese island Honshu 2.4 meters towards east and it shifted the earth on its axis by the estimates of somewhere between 10 cm to 25 cm. Further, this led to an increase in earth’s rotational speed by up to 1.8 µs per day and infrasound waves were generated in result of the perturbations of Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer satellite and low orbiting gravitational fields. Therefore, this earthquake resulted...
