Defining and Analyzing Religion This exercise will help you understand the difficulty social scientists have when it comes to defining and analyzing religion. Take out a piece of paper and answer the following questions:

a. How do you define religion?

b. What does it mean to you?

c. Do you believe in the supernatural?

d. If you do believe in the supernatural, how do you imagine it to be?

After everyone in class has completed these questions, turn to your neighbor and compare your answers with his or her answers. Note the similarities and differences. Share your answers with as many of your classmates as possible.
