1. How do the opening credits set the time and mood?
The opening sets the mood and time by the use of images of various parents and grandparents. In
fact, the stillness of the environment creates gravity and sets off the movie’s plot from the very beginning.
2. What motivates Bonnie to go off with Clyde?
Bonnie is motivated to go off with Clyde because she is quite frustrated by her life as a waitress. She wishes to do something adventurous in life and he views it in the stealing work of Clyde.
3. How is her sexual excitement represented in the film?
Bonnie’s appearance as full naked from the very beginning represents her suppressed sexual desires. She is not satisfied with herself and wants to explore her physical needs as much possible as she can do.
4. What is Clyde’s self-perception about what he does?
Clyde’s self perception is protective as well as quite commanding about what he does. He finds it a work full of pleasures and also, he views it as a part of his duty rather than a crime.
5. Throughout the film there are many photographs of the characters. How does this establish the theme of public image vs private image?
The photographs clearly distinguish the public images from private images. While Bonnie has some sweet personal memories that she prefers to keep with her, Clyde has an open nature and on his part, he keeps the pictures for public viewing. There is a veiled mask type image that Clyde sometimes reflects before the viewers.
6. Discuss the escalating violence between the first robbery, the grocer, the bank.
The concept of violence is very clear. While the gang members try to rob the bank, their action is protested by the people inside and thus, the brawl starts and keeps on going. It also contributes to the publicity of Bonnie and Clyde both as duo robbers.
