1. Introduction to Network and Requirements
Local Area Network (LAN) is required to be designed and configured to MyNetwork (MNC) under the newly hired building. The occupied building is a five story building and it is proposed by MNC to establish the department separately at a floor of five story building. So, that the LAN is required to be designed in such a way that each department at the given floor of five story building has its won network and also be able to communicate intra department, access the Internet and services of locally hosted web and email servers.
The departments details of the MNC and the specification of setup of departmental network at a floor of five story building are as follows.
a) Administration : 1st floor
b) Marketing : 2nd floor
c) HR : 3rd floor
d) Sales : 4th floor
e) Server Hosting : ground floor
With above specification of department setup floor wise, it is required to create the sub LANs from the whole LAN of five story building of MNC. The details of sub LANs consideration for each of the department and server at ground floor are as follows.
a) Administration sub LAN : Subnet of administration department at 1st floor.
b) Marketing sub LAN : Subnet of Marketing department at 2nd floor
c) HR sub LAN : Subnet of HR department at 3rd floor
d) Sales Sub LAN : Subnet of sales department at 4th floor
e) Server Sub LAN : Server Farm of LAN of five story building at ground floor.
2. Local Area Network Design
LAN is designed by selecting the topology, networking devices and developing the blueprint such as layout of physical network and device connectivity. According the requirements of LAN the details of design is based on the consideration of following factors.
2.1 LAN Topology
Star LAN topology is one of the common network topology due to its features such as cost effectiveness, ease of network connectivity problem diagnostics, direct connection to the workstations from the backbone network devices and intelligent network traffic distribution among the workstations. Therefore, for the LAN of MNC in its occupied five story building the design is taken with the framework of star LAN topology.
