Studying Relationship between Tenure of an Executive and status of Divorce
using Correlation and Regression Techniques
Aim
To anal
yze the given data on tenure of major executives at major corporations and whether
those executives have been divorced to help Human Resource Department in making
hiring decisions.
Analysis
Eta Squared
The most appropriate measure to evaluate the relationship between tenure and divorce is
Eta Squared. Since in this case, tenure is of interval scale and divorce is a nominal
variable, Pearson’s correlation coefficient cannot be used. Eta square tells us the
percentage of variance of tenure explained by the Divorce. It can vary between 0 to1.
Since the variable Divorce is a nominal variable, correlation coefficient cannot be
calculated, thus we use Eta Squared.
To calculate Eta Squared, we conduct a One Way ANOVA with Tenure as the dependent
variable. Table 1 gives the result of ANOVA

Thus 0.56 or 56% of the variance of tenure is explained by the Divorce. This can be used
as a correlation between two variables. The direction of the relationship...
