Currently, I am a superintendent for a construction company in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Whenever I am digging my footing it is always smart to get your eyes on the type of dirt your digging into. I like to look for that change in sediment from the loose top layer soil to the dense clay soil underneath. If I can't make an accurate call on the soil I will get a Soil Engineer in the area to evaluate and test the soil that I will be pouring my footing on. If as a builder tried to cut corners this is not the place you want to cut at. The Footing of your building is the heart of the building and if this isnt stable then the building will be unsafe. This falls under the 3 F's Footing, Foundation, Framing if any one of these is not done properly then it can really cause big issues down the road. Where I see builders cutting corners is during the backfill period. Using granular soils will help stabilize the slab and make for a stable fill from the slab down to the grade of the house.
