Culture and power are both interrelated and inextricably related to each other. Culture is the knowledge and characteristic of a particular group of people, encompassing religion, language, social habits, cuisine, art, music, etc. Culture can be used to define people as a collective. Power, on the other hand, is an individual’s ability or entity to direct or control others(Swartz, D.,2012). One of the oldest communities today with diverse cultures is, “The Gullah”. They are a distinctive group of black people from Georgia and South Carolina residing in the southeastern part of the United States(Matory, J. L.,2008). They are one of the oldest cultural groups who are still able to thrive as a “nation within a nation”. Their strong community life and geographical isolation have helped then in preserving their African heritage culture than the other Black American groups(Tyler, S. M. ,2003). They have been struggling to preserve their culture from those in power. Some plantations which they inherited from their ancestors of the Gullah community were redeveloped as hunting destinations or resorts by wealthy whites. The people with power are trying to gain monetary benefits from this land jeopardizing their heritage culture.
