Professor Hofstede is one of the "world's most quoted cross-cultural experts" (as cited in Lundby, 2010, p. 23). His work is heavily referenced in Chapter 2 of the text and in other research in this area. Four critical dimensions have been created to help explain differences in cultural expectations: egalitarianism vs. hierarchy; individualism vs. collectivism; achievement vs. relationship orientation; and loose vs. tight structure (Hofstede Centre, n.d.; Weech, 2001). Knowing these dimensions helps improve our intercultural competence as researchers and practitioners in the global workplace.
