Latino/ Hispanic Americans Defined:
Hispanic is not a racial groups; for example, a person can be white, black, or Asian and still be considered Hispanic. Hispanic is a generic term referring to all Spanish- surname and Spanish speaking people who reside within the United States and Puerto Rico (a common wealth). Latino is generally the preferred label on the West Coast, parts of the East Coast, and the Southeast. The term Latino is a Spanish word indicating a person of Latin American origin, and it reflects the gender-specific nature of its Spanish- language derivation: Latin American origin, and Latina, for women. Hispanic is generally preferred on the East Coast, specifically within the Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban communities (although individual members with each of these communities may prefer the specific term referring to their country of heritage).
(1) A growing sense of community identification, ( 2) HIGH – PROFILE AND SUCCESSFUL ROLE MODELS, AND (3) INCREASED PRIDE IN ETHNIC AND CULTURAL IDENTITY, HAVE EMBRACED THE use of Hispanic and Latino/ Latino for self-and group reference. A new and dynamic pride, confidence, and self- esteem in the Latino/ Hispanic Americans) and have replaced some of the past negative associations with terms Latino and Hispanic, often fostered in past by negative associations with the terms Latino and Hispanic, immigration statuses, migrant work roles, educational underachievement, and impoverished communities.

Myths and Stereotypes :
Knowledge of and sensitivity to Latino/ Hispanic Americans’ concerns, dividersity, historical back-ground, and life experiences will facilitate the crime-fighting and peacekeeping mission of law enforcement officers. It is important to have an understanding about some of the myths and stereotypes of Latino/ Hispanic Americans that contribute to the prejudice, discrimination, and bias this population encounters. Many law enforcement officers do not have much experience with the diversity of Latino/Hispanic American group and learn about these groups only through stereotypes ( often perpetuated by movies) and through the very limited contact involved in their law enforcement duties. Stereotypes views of Latino / Hispanic American reduce invdivuals within this group to simplistic, one-dimensional characters and have led many Americans to lump members of these diverse groups into stereotypic group: Mexicans.. page 200
