CSC 260 Lab 8 - Research on RISC vs. CISC Due Date: 12/16/19 11:00 AM Late submission will not be accepted Be sure to document any help sources! Make sure your name and N number is on top of the document. For this lab, you will have to write a brief research paper on the topic of RISC vs. CISC architecture. Start with a brief statement of what is the difference between RISC and CISC CPU architectures. This should be one or two small paragraphs. Next, pick and state one architecture that you want to try and prove is better than the other and give an example of a CPU of that type of architecture. Then list 5 points/reasons with justifications/reasons why you think that the type you chose is better. This should be 5 bullet points or numbered 1 through 5. Each point should be brief but long enough to explain your reasoning. The entire paper shouldn’t be more than 3 pages including the last page which has to have a list of your sources of info.

RISC vs CISC
RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) and CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) are two approaches of architectural designs of
a computer processor. The former approach uses a small number of instructions, formats and addressing modes enabling streamlined and fast operation of the system control unit. RISC architecture is designed to increase the speed of operation through low instruction count. These instructions are highly optimized set of instructions. Some of the CPUs that use this approach are Motorola 88000, SPARC, AMD 29k and Intel i860. The first RISC CPU was developed at University of California, Berkley by IBM in late 70s and early 80s of 20th century. Whereas, the later approach of CISC executes single instructions with numerous low-level operations. The CISC CPU design approach supports multistep operations by single command. CISC reduces the instruction count but it translates instructions into micro-operations which require a lot of work. It may sometimes lead to wasteful execution of instructions in a wrongly predicted path as stated in (Ciji Isen). Some examples of CISC are Intel x86 CPUs, VAX, System/360 and Motorola 68000 family. On the other hand, RISC design strategy is based on the concept that basic instructions set offers high performance by utilizing some cycles per instruction. This implies that RISC architecture approach can perform more MIPS (millions of instructions per second) as it is...
