Each essay must be submitted as a Word document attached to a message/email on Blackboard to the Professor. (Be sure to keep an electronic backup copy.) Suggested Length: 1-3 pages, excluding references, unless otherwise instructed. Although brief, each essay should be a well-organized and coherent formal commentary, written as a professional statement that could be submitted for external publication. Also, be sure to provide complete citation information for any literature to which you refer in the essay. (See preparation guidelines below for citation style and formatting instructions.) Each essay should be typed and checked for spelling and grammar, in addition to content. Essay Preparation Guidelines Each essay should be given a short descriptive title. Also, please put the following information on each essay: 1) your full name and student number, 2) course number and section, and 3) assignment number and due date. • Citation Style and Formatting Instructions Type/word process your essay using font Times Roman/size 12 or equivalent, with at least 1- inch margins all around. The text may be single- or double-spaced, and all pages should be numbered, beginning with the first page of the main text (not the cover page, if you include one). Citations and references should be formatted as indicated below. Check the entire document for spelling and grammar, in addition to content. IN-TEXT CITATIONS: Acknowledge all sources you use in the text of your essay, with full citation information provided in a list of references at the end. Whenever you refer to, summarize, paraphrase, or quote someone else's work, or give important facts or figures, the source of the information must be given. The reference system that should be used is In-Text Citations (generally following the ASR, or American Sociological Review, style format) which puts the author's surname, publication year, and, in the case of quotations or close paraphrases, the page number(s) referred to in the body of the text. Provide the full citation in the list of references. In-text citation of a source with three or more authors should be indicated by the surname of the first author followed by "et al." and the year, along with relevant page number(s) if needed. 2 Examples of in-text citations: Taro perhaps was domesticated in Burma (Keleny 1962; Wheeler 1968) and sugar cane in New Guinea (Price 1957). Science encourages a trade-off between short-term economic growth and longer-term social development (Schofer et al. 2000). Smith-Burfitt (1968: 269) argues that the climate change also affected ritual life in significant ways (also see Brown and Trent 1986). The fact is that, "in order to improve their image abroad, politicians in a country with a poor human rights record might adopt progressive policies to appease transnational agencies or investors" (Suárez 2007: 334-335). Do not use such terms as "ibid." and "op. cit." Do not use footnotes or endnotes for citation referencing. Footnotes (not endnotes) may be used (sparingly) to make side comments that are relevant to the essay but which would detract from the flow of the argument or presentation if included in the body of the essay. You may use footnotes if needed to clarify or expand upon something for which it is not appropriate to do so within the main text. If you do use footnotes, number them in sequence and place them at the bottom of the page on which they are referenced. Use in-text citations (see above) when needed in footnotes as well, with publication details placed in the reference list. In any case, keep footnotes to a minimum. REFERENCE LIST: A list of references or a bibliography at the end of your paper should provide publication details of your documentation resources. Reference list entries may be single-spaced and should be listed in alphabetical order by author surname and then date. Individual personal or first names may be spelled out or indicated by initials. Titles of books and journals should be either in italics or underlined, with the articles within them set off by quotation marks.
