Introduction
Aborigines in Australia have a vibrant culture th
at is constantly growing and adapting to the 21st century. Red Ochre lifetime achievement award winner Yvonne Koolmatrie is a Ngarrindjeri weaver from South Australia's Riverland. According to Ms. Koolmatrie, she has been instrumental in the preservation of a Coorong weaving technique, which her mother was born in. Miss Koolmatrie was taught weaving techniques by the late Ngarrindjeri elder, Dorothy Kartinyeri, Aunty Dory, at a workshop in 1982. Seit 40 years, Ms. Koolmatrie's art has been shown throughout metropolitan and regional Australia, including the Sydney Opera House, Art Gallery of NSW and South Australian Museum, and the National Gallery of Victoria as well as the National Gallery of Australia.
Feldman’s 4 Stage Criticism
To revive the ancient Ngarrindjeri fibre weaving skills, Yvonne Koolmatrie, a well-known master weaver, has committed her creative practise. Her unique style and technique have evolved as she perfected the coiled bundle way of weaving sedge grass and rushes, resulting in complex sculptural shapes that are imbued with legends from her culture. The Ngarrindjeri language and culture have been revitalised thanks to Aunty Yvonne's seminars and lectures (Farrell & Fry, 2017). Her weaving technique was perfected and she began to explore with her own "stitch". While weaving, she began to include Dreaming narratives like as the River Bunyip, Mulgewanki (moolyawonk), and the Rainbow Serpent into her work.
