SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Introduction
Every year the problems relating to the world in terms of its survival and availability of resources keep rising. The key for businesses to thrive in this paradigm is to adopt sustainable practices that would serve it to tackle issues like global warming, the increasing amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the depletion of fossil fuels and resources that are responsible for the generation of energy. Businesses need to be innovative and develop products that are environmentally friendly and promote a healthy habitat for future civilizations. These issues that pertain to the destruction of nature need to be dealt with sooner. The COP24 highlighted the significance of taking immediate measures to mitigate the effects of global warming. The countries that participated have made important policies to put this into practice. Another vital factor that contributes to the organization in maintaining a good reputation and keeping the surrounding economy stable is Corporate Social Responsibility. Every organization that caters to the social needs not only builds a good image but also improves the standard of living of the people around. Organizations need to be socially responsible as it promotes a good relationship with the stakeholders. The CSR can be leveraged to make a successful business and promote social welfare. The best way to serve a global crisis of climate change can be by integrating sustainable practices and CSR.
Literature Review
(Nemli and Prof, 2004) Corporate Sustainability comprises 3 dimensions which are called “the triple bottom line”, economic prosperity and opportunity; social equity and quality of life; ecological resource preservation. The four aspects of a sustainable enterprise according to (‘Designing Resilient, Sustainable Systems’, 2003) that were identified are the sensitivity adaptability to the environment, consistency and sense of identity, acceptance of diversity and the capital being used conservatively. These features when employed improve the lifecycle of the organization significantly. (Crowther, 2004) In his book explained sustainability as the present activity performed concerning the future. (Estes, 2009) defined sustainability as the ability to satisfy present requirements without affecting the future generation’s ability to satisfy their own needs. According to (Kriyantono, 2015) Corporate Social Responsibility is the social engagement program in which the organization participates to contribute towards the economic development and improving the social welfare using its regular operations. Sustainability is the response of an organization to thrive amid environmental issues and increase its life span in the market. It differs from Corporate Social Responsibility in the requirement to engage with society. An organization participating in Corporate Social Responsibility has four factors that it caters to and they are economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic (HE, Wendlandt Amezaga and Silva, 2012). (Bowen, 1953) Explained Corporate Social Responsibility as the commitment organizations made to follow political and other decision-making processes and to pursue what was deemed objectively valuable to the society.
