Question 1
The report igniting change upholds the fact that even after so much advancement and extensive technological development a section of the global citizen still depends on rudimentary cook stoves and traditional coo
king methods which are unhealthy and affect human health. It is unfortunate that more than half of the population of the developing country still depends on the burning of wood and other solid fuels for cooking (Franklin, 2017). There is no doubt to note the fact that these traditional methods of cooking are extremely hazardous to health. Statistics confirm that these unhealthy cooking practices leads to premature death and kills people with chronic illness.
Besides the above facts, it is unfortunate to note that the practice of healthy cooking has a more profound impact on the women and girls in these countries because they are responsible for cooking and providing a meal to the family. In most of the developing and underdeveloped nations certain section of the urban population and majority of the rural population depends upon wood and solid fuels for the purpose of cooking. The women and girls of the family have to collect these fuels for the purpose of cooking. In some countries of Asia and Africa, women visit forests or distant areas in order to collect the same. This laborious task not only reflects the loss of human resources but also increased gender biases and sexual assault on women (Miao et al., 2017). A significant number of women are raped when they visit the distant area for the forest in order to collect wood for solid fuel for the purpose of cooking.
A significant effect is also viable from the point of view of environmental destruction. This practice of inefficient cooking has led to a hazardous impact on the environment by depleting the ecosystem and forest. Deforestation and depletion of the ecosystem are highly correlated to such inefficient methods of cooking. The emission of greenhouse gases due to healthy cooking practices has also turned out to be one of the significant factors. An increase in the level of greenhouse gases with persistent climatic changes has justified the fact that there is a need for a global alliance to initiate a change by introducing the practice of clean cook stoves throughout the globe. Thereby, the report addresses the need for a persistent change in the economic health and environment aspects search that it reduces the negative impacts on humankind and leads to sustainable development in the future.
It upholds an introspective context of the economic and physical well-being of the individuals in the society. Hence it proposes the need for "life-saving" and "life-changing" innovation which will not only be affordable but also healthy. It also upholds the need for innovative business models for smooth coordination and effective international approach to reach out to the victims of these unclean cooking methods. Therefore, the central theme of the report igniting change is the Global Alliance for providing clean cook stoves for healthy and safe cooking practices.
Question 2
WHO reports that around 3 million people across the globe, more specifically in the developing and underdeveloped nations depend on traditional methods of cooking or open flame rudimentary cook stoves that use solid fuels like wood and coal? It is true that even in developed countries modern cook stoves are still regarded as a luxury. Hence, the poor populations of the developing and underdeveloped countries can't afford search expensive clean cooking practices like modern cook stoves. Therefore, they are in no place to replace their traditional method of cooking with that of expensive modern cook stoves. In spite of the fact that traditional and rudimentary cook stoves are silent killers, they have to stick to the same because modern cooking practices are expensive for them.
In sub-Saharan Africa and the Asian continent, clean cook stoves are apparently missing. This significantly depends upon traditional cooking methods to cook their meals. It is also noted that a significant part of the urban population also depends on traditional cooking methods because of expensive modern cook stoves.
Moreover, certain traditional factors also drive this population to depend on traditional methods of cooking even if there is availability and access to electricity or LPG. Therefore, economic factors, cultural factor, and supply factors are certain essential aspects that address the need for efficient clean cook stoves. So, the use of efficient clean cook stoves is an important issue persisting in developing countries.
Question 3
Research and studies confirm that there is a high correlation between the prevalence of poverty in an economy and the use of clean cook stoves. It is evident that traditional methods of cooking are both energy-consuming and time-consuming. Traditional methods of cooking usually use rudimentary cook stoves and open fire methods which require a lot of solid fuels. These solid fuels need to be collected from the forest and isolated distant areas. Therefore, the prevalence of clean cook stoves can reduce extensive wastage of human resources which could be used for the economic purpose and thereby help in reducing economic poverty.
The time spent in collecting these fuels would be used otherwise for instance working in fields or starting a small business or engagement in other pursuits that can reduce poverty in the households. So, it is clear that the traditional method of cooking forces women to give up time that they could have used to spend in...
