Watch the documentaryAre You Good or Evil(Leganto). As you watch respond to the following questions and bring your answers along to this week's tutorial.

  • How does the influence of our genes and brain function change the way we think about crime and punishment?

  • If genetic factors are responsible for people committing crime, should we adjust responses from the criminal justice system on the basis of individual genetics? For example, should people with genes that predispose them to violence receive different sentences if they engage in crime?

  • Alternatively, should genetic information be used to pre-emptively identify potential killers or other predisposed to violence? Is it appropriate to pre-emptively imprison someone if science tells us they have a high chance of engaging in violent crime?

  • What other ways could this information be used to help us manage crime?Come up with at least one ideaabout how we could potentially use genetic information to respond to crime.

Influence of Brain Function and Genes Changing our Perceptions about Punishment and Crime
Genes influence the brain. It brings changes in the brain, which leads to the change in the behavior of the person. Similarly, functioning of the brain affects the way we think about the crime and punishment (Vimeo, 2016). Childhood trauma and stress act as culprit, which affect the neural development and affect the decision-making ability of the person. Brain controls all the human behavior whether the use of harmful chemical to influence the neural circuit or to live in a solitary confinement. As suggested by Jorgensen, Anderson and Barnes (2016), lack of emotional traits in people instigates them towards the crime. Recent studies have shown that there is difference between the brain of a psychopath and a normal person. Lack of genes, which help people to connect with world, are more responsible for developing severe criminal tendencies in person.
