CRIM 3659 Research Paper Assignment (40%) In this assignment, you should pick a topic related to human rights violations, pick a context, and explore these in detail. In addition to the course material, you should use at least 4 external sources. The research paper should be 6 pages, excluding the bibliography. The paper is due November 24, 2021, 1.30 pm (Toronto time). Topics should include one of the major areas of human rights violations covered in the course. These are: counter-terrorism measures, detention, crime prevention measures, protest policing, and border controls. After providing an overview of human rights violations in one of these specific areas, you should focus on a particular context (such as Canada, the United States or the European Union) and deepen your analysis. You can also pick a non-Western context (e.g. human rights violations in China’s detention camps in the Xinjiang region). Note: Human rights violations in urban policing (e.g. against racialized populations) cannot be picked as a research topic.
