Crescent Dunes Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP)

Crescent Dunes CSP plant installed in Nevada (US) is the world’s first utility-scale facility featuring an advanced molten salt power tower to generate electricity 24 hours a day using steam turbines. Figure 10.12 shows an aerial view of the 110-MW power plant.

Molten salt as both the heat transfer fluid and thermal energy storage medium provides efficient and cost-effective storage for solar energy. The tower height is 640 ft (195 m) total; with 540 ft (164.5 m) of concrete plus the 100-ft-tall receiver (30.5 m). The steam generation process is similar to the process used in conventional fossil fuel or nuclear power plants; the only difference is that the source of heat is solar energy. CSP with storage provides controllable and reliable capacity to meet demands throughout the day and night.
